What to do while you wait
- Get the car off the travel lane if it will roll safely. Shoulder or median, as far right as you can.
- Hazards on, day or night.
- If you got clear of the road, stay in the vehicle with your seatbelt on — standing on the shoulder is the most dangerous part of a breakdown. If you couldn’t get off the roadway, or you think the vehicle might be hit, get out on the side away from traffic and move well clear.
- Have your location ready — nearest cross street, mile marker, or a dropped pin from your phone's map.
