Flatbed vs wheel lift: what decides the method

The right towing method depends on the exact vehicle, its condition and the manufacturer's transport instructions. A flatbed carries the vehicle with all wheels off the road. A wheel lift raises one axle; dollies may be used to support the other wheels when the manufacturer permits that method.

What a flatbed does

A flatbed, also called a rollback, uses a deck that tilts and slides for loading. The vehicle is secured on the deck for transport. Keeping its wheels off the road avoids wheel rotation during the trip, but loading and securement still need to follow the vehicle's instructions.

Low clearance, damaged suspension, locked wheels and limited access can change the equipment or approach needed. A flatbed is not a guarantee that every vehicle can be loaded from every location.

What a wheel lift does

A wheel lift supports and raises two wheels. If the other wheels remain on the road, they rotate during transport. Whether that is permitted depends on the drivetrain, transmission and model-specific instructions, including any speed or distance limits.

Do not assume that two-wheel drive or selecting neutral makes wheels-down towing acceptable. Access constraints also do not override the manufacturer's requirements.

AWD, 4WD, electric and hybrid vehicles

These labels are important information for the operator, but they do not describe one universal towing procedure. Provide the year, make, model and drivetrain, and mention any loss of power or damage. See our guide to checking transport requirements for AWD and 4WD vehicles.

For a specific example, Tesla's Model 3 instructions require all four tires to remain off the ground during transport and recommend a flatbed. They also allow a wheel lift and dollies under stated conditions and limits. That example is not approval for another vehicle.

Loading is part of the decision

• Tell the operator about low bumpers, modifications or unusually heavy loads.
• Report damaged wheels, flat tires, locked steering or a vehicle stuck in park.
• Describe garages, slopes, soft ground and overhead clearance.
• If you do not know whether the vehicle rolls or steers, say so. Leave movement and release procedures to the operator.

The operator needs to assess access, equipment capacity, loading points and securement before proceeding.

• Which equipment will be used for my exact vehicle?
• How does that method follow its transport instructions?
• Does its condition or pickup location change the plan or price?
• What happens if the vehicle cannot be loaded as described?
